Reading eBooks on Apple Devices

Reading eBooks on Apple Devices

Most of our eBooks can be downloaded for offline reading on your Apple device. All of our eBook platform providers recommend using the Bluefire Reader app to read their downloaded eBooks.

Depending on the screen size of your Apple device, eBooks can also be read online within the internet browser on your device.

Important Things to Know:

Bluefire Reader, the recommended reading app for downloaded eBooks, allows you to take notes and export them* when you are done with the eBook.

*Make sure to export your annotations before the checkout period expires.*

Before you attempt to download an eBook, do the following:

On your computer:

  1. Create an Adobe ID account (free)
  2. Download Adobe Digital Editions (free) and authorize with your Adobe ID

On your Apple device

  1. Download the Bluefire Reading app (free - available via iTunes) and authorize with your Adobe ID

EBSCOhost eBooks - What's best for reading on an Apple device?

iPad

EBSCO ebooks can be viewed online within an internet browser or downloaded for offline use in the reading app of your choice (examples below use the Bluefire Reading app)

iPhone and iPod

EBSCO eBooks are best downloaded for reading via the reading app of your choice (example below uses the Bluefire Reading app)


Does your Apple device have an internet connection?

The process for downloading an EBSCO eBook varies based on whether your Apple device has an internet connection or not.


First Steps: My Apple device has an internet connection

Before you attempt to download an eBook, do the following:

  1. Create an Adobe ID account (free)
  2. Download the Bluefire Reading app (free - available via iTunes)
    • Authorize with your Adobe ID
  3. Create a My EBSCOhost account (free)

When you have located an eBook you wish to download, look for the Download (Offline) link*

*If the Download link does not appear, the eBook cannot be downloaded.  It can only be viewed online.  Online full-text viewing is only possible on the iPad.

You will be prompted to Sign to your My EBSCOhost account.

If you have not already created a My EBSCOhost account, you can select Create a new Account.  Once you have created an account, you can continue the process of checking out the eBook.

Once you login:

  • pick a Checkout Period (default is 2 days)
  • click the Checkout & Download button.

You will be prompted to open the eBook in Bluefire

When you click the Bluefire button, the eBook will automatically be added to your Bluefire Reading Library.


First Steps: My Apple device does not have an internet connection

Before you attempt to download an eBook, do the following:

On your computer:

  1. Create an Adobe ID account (free)
  2. Download Adobe Digital Editions (free)
    • Authorize with your Adobe ID
  3. Create a My EBSCOhost account (free)
    •   Required in order to checkout and download eBooks from EBSCOhost

On your Apple device:

  1. Download the Bluefire Reading app (free - available via iTunes)
    •   Authorize with your Adobe ID

Checking out and Downloading an EBSCO eBook - Apple device does not have an internet connection

When you have located an eBook you want to download, click the Download This eBook (Offline) link

You will be prompted to Sign to your My EBSCOhost account.

If you have not already created a My EBSCOhost account, you can select Create a new Account.  Once you have created an account, you can continue the process of checking out the eBook.

Once you login:

  • Pick a Checkout Period (default is 2 days)
  • Click the Checkout & Download button.

You will be prompted to open the eBook in Adobe Digital Editions

Transferring eBook to your Apple device - Apple device does not have an internet connection

Connect your Apple device to your computer and open iTunes

1. Click on the Apps tab

2. Click on Bluefire in the File Sharing section.

3. Click the Add button in the lower right hand corner of the screen to locate the eBook you just downloaded.

Adobe Digital Editions stores your eBook files in a default location on your computer:

  • OSXyour-home-directory/Documents/Digital Editions
  • Windowsyour-home-directory/Documents/My Digital Editions

4. Navigate to the appropriate location on your computer

5. Highlight the eBook file you wish to transfer and click the Open button

iTunes will transfer the eBook file to your Apple device

Bluefire will automatically add the eBook to your reading library.

EBL eBooks - what's best for reading on an Apple device?

iPad users:

EBL ebooks can be viewed online within an internet browser or downloaded for offline use in the reading app of your choice (examples below use the Bluefire Reading app)

iPhone and iPod Touch users:

EBL eBooks are best downloaded for reading via the reading app of your choice (example below uses the Bluefire Reading app)

Click the Read Online button beneath the book cover image.

  3. Click the Download button

Bluefire will automatically open and download the eBook to your reading library.

Business Expert Press eBooks - What's best for reading on an Apple device?

iPad

Business Expert Press eBooks can be viewed online within an internet browser or downloaded for offline use in the reading app of your choice (examples below use the Bluefire Reading app).

iPhone and iPod

Business Expert Press eBooks are best downloaded for reading via the reading app of your choice (examples below use the Bluefire Reading app).

Important Things to Know

Business Expert Press eBooks can be downloaded in their entirety. There are no restrictions on their usage. Once you download a Business Expert Press eBook, it is yours.

Before you attempt to download an eBook, do the following:

  1. Create an Adobe ID account (free)
  2. Download the Bluefire Reading app (free - available via iTunes)
    • Authorize with your Adobe ID

Downloading a Business Expert Press eBook - Apple device has internet connection

On the eBook you wish to download, click the Read Online button:

Click the Globe icon to the left of the eBook Table of Contents pane:

Click the Download PDF button:

Once the PDF downloads, you should be prompted to open the PDF in Bluefire Reader.


First Steps: My Apple device does not have an internet connection

Before you attempt to download an eBook, do the following:

  1. Create an Adobe ID account (free)
  2. Download the Bluefire Reading app (free - available via iTunes)
    • Authorize with your Adobe ID

Downloading a Business Expert Press eBook - Apple device does not have internet connection

On the eBook you wish to download, click the Read Online button:

Click the Globe icon to the left of the eBook Table of Contents pane:

Click the Download PDF button:

The PDF of the entire eBook will download.  Save the PDF to your computer--give it an identifiable filename and save it in an easily accessible location on your computer:

Transferring a Business Expert Press eBook to your Apple device - Apple device does not have an internet connection

Connect your Apple device to your computer and open iTunes.

1. Click on the Apps tab

2. Click on Bluefire in the File Sharing section

3. Click the Add button in the lower right hand corner of the screen to locate the eBook you just downloaded.

4. Navigate to the folder on your computer where you saved the PDF. 

5.  Highlight the PDF file you just downloaded and click the Open button

iTunes will transfer the eBook file to your Apple device

Bluefire will automatically add the PDF file to your reading library
