Open Access Publishing

Guidance in open access scholarly publishing for researchers in all disciplines.

Open Access Funding

EKU faculty, staff, and students have several options to help cover Article Processing Charges (APCs) for open access publishing:

  • External Grants: Apply for grants from funding agencies that support research publication costs.
  • Library Partnerships: While the library doesn't currently have a dedicated fund for APCs, we do have a partnership with the American Chemical Society (ACS) that offers discounted publication fees in certain ACS journals. We're actively working to secure similar agreements with other publishers in the future.

Why Consider These Funding Options?

Open access publishing allows you to disseminate your research findings to a wider audience and fosters greater scholarly exchange. By exploring these funding options and potential discounts, you can:

  • Minimize the Financial Burden: Reduce the cost associated with publishing open access, making it more accessible.
  • Increase Research Impact: Expand the reach of your research and potentially attract more citations.

Library Partnerships / Publisher Agreements

EKU Libraries has negotiated agreements with publishers to cover the costs of open access publishing as part of our subscription and licensing deals. These agreements are designed to provide a way for EKU authors to publish their work open access without having to pay the Article Processing Charges (APCs) out of their own pockets. These agreements allow EKU researchers to make their work freely and openly accessible to a global audience, promoting the dissemination of knowledge and advancing the mission of the University.

American Chemical Society

EKU Libraries has partnered with the American Chemical Society (ACS) to give EKU authors the opportunity to publish their research in any ACS journal under a CC BY open access license free of charge.

Conditions:

  • Must be corresponding Author
  • Must have institution affiliation on profile in the ACS Paragon Plus submission system

Current Agreement Ends:

  • Ongoing

Grant Funding

Authors may write publication costs into a proposal budget when applying for grants. If publication costs were included in the proposal budget and detailed in the proposal budget justification, authors may request from the sponsor a no-cost extension so that grant funds will cover publication fees after the main grant period—but a no-cost extension is not guaranteed.
