Mendeley

Guide to a free, easy-to-use tool that helps you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources

Mendeley and MS Word - a Winning Combo!

The Mendeley Cite add-on for Microsoft (MS) Word allows you to quickly and easily insert references directly from your Mendeley library into a MS Word document--without even opening Mendeley! You can then format the document and create your bibliography page according to your preferred citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). Mendeley Cite works with both the desktop and web versions of Mendeley.

NOTE: See Mendeley's Getting started with Mendeley Cite for more information and instructions.

Create in-text citations and bibliographies

  1. Put your cursor where you want your citation to appear in your MS Word document.
  2. Select or click on the Insert Citation button on the References tab on the toolbar ribbon.
  3. In the search box that appears, begin typing keywords (author, title, etc.) from the desired citation and choose the correct source from the list.
  4. Choose the desired citation style from the drop-down menu.
  5. To make changes in the in-text citation (for example, to change the author-date citation to a page number), edit the citation and click outside of the citation box to laod the confirmation dialog box. Choose Keep Manual Edit.

NOTE: Mendeley uses the term "bibliography" as a blanket term for the list of resources you use in the development of your paper (e.g., APA's References, MLA's Works Cited, Chicago's Bibliography, etc.).
  1. Put your cursor at the end of your MS Word document.
  2. Select or click on Insert Bibliography non the References tab on the toolbar ribbon.
  3. The bibliography list will appear and should be formatted according to the citation style you have selected (you can modify this using the Style drop-down menu on the toolbar ribbon).
  4. Edit your bibliography as needed.
