In Women & Gender Studies, a scholarly book is written by an expert, often a professor or researcher, and published by an academic press such as Duke University Press or University of Kentucky Press. These books present original research, include citations or bibliographies, and are written for students, researchers, and scholars.
A scholarly book may be a single-author monograph or an edited volume with chapters by multiple authors compiled by an editor.
Use search terms like feminist theory, gender studies, or LGBTQ policy. Look for books with academic publishers, and avoid popular trade books or self-help titles. You can add terms like "university press" to your search to help narrow your results to academic publishers.
Sometimes you may need a book that EKU Libraries doesn't have. In most cases, we can get a copy of the book for you to use. EKU Libraries has a wonderful Library Express service that can borrow materials from other libraries at no cost to you. This video tutorial will show you how to locate and request those materials.
