Library Trials Inform Future Anatomy Resource Planning

This spring, EKU Libraries conducted trials of two anatomy resources, 3D Atlas of Human Anatomy and Gale Interactive: Human Anatomy, to assess their value for our current academic programs. These followed similar trials we ran last spring for BioDigital Human and Visible Body, as part of our ongoing effort to identify high-quality digital anatomy tools that best serve students and faculty.

While we received limited feedback—just a handful of responses from faculty and librarians—the insights were helpful. Usage statistics during the trial period were modest, even with full-semester access.

Given the high cost of anatomy resources and the current level of engagement, we’ve decided to pause on adding a new platform at this time.

That said, the picture may change significantly in the near future. EKU’s ongoing exploration of a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program and a College of Medicine has naturally sparked conversations about the library’s role in supporting such initiatives.

While nothing is finalized yet, EKU Libraries is beginning to explore what a sustainable anatomy and medical resource collection might look like. We’re considering costs, models for access, and long-term needs—so we’re ready to support students and faculty if and when a medical school becomes a reality.

We appreciate everyone who participated in the recent trials and shared their thoughts. Your feedback is instrumental as we prepare for the future.
