Your Research, Open to the World: No-Cost OA Publishing for EKU Faculty

by Christina Stallard on 2025-10-20T00:00:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

Publishing Open Access isn’t just about accessibility — it’s about impact. Faculty who publish OA see higher readership, broader public engagement, and stronger citation performance (on average 19% more citations than paywalled articles). It’s also a strategic way to build a promotion-ready CV while making scholarship available to the communities who need it.

EKU Libraries actively supports this kind of publishing. Our Open Access Publishing Research Guide walks you through where to publish, how to apply funding, and which journals waive fees for EKU authors.

Publish Open Access with No APCs Using EKU’s Publisher Agreements

EKU authors can take advantage of our negotiated agreements to reduce or eliminate article processing charges when publishing Open Access:

Full APC waivers — publish Open Access at no cost in journals from:

  • American Chemical Society (ACS)
  • Oxford University Press (OUP)

Discounted APCs — 25% off article processing charges in journals from:

  • American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Under these agreements, articles may be published immediately Open Access under a CC BY license, allowing authors to retain full credit while maximizing visibility.

More Agreements on the Way

EKU Libraries is also exploring additional “Subscribe to Open” models with publishers like BioOne and Project Muse, which would allow authors to publish Open Access without APCs through the library’s existing subscriptions. We’ll announce updates as soon as they’re active.

Need Funding for Another Open Access Journal?

If you’re publishing in a journal outside of these agreements but it supports Open Access, you may be eligible to apply for APC support through the Publication Support Fund.
