Long Story Short Competition

Eastern Kentucky University Libraries is excited to announce our participation in the 3rd edition of the Long Story Short Award, an inter-university writing contest. All EKU students aged 18 and older are eligible to participate.

To participate, students are invited to imagine and compose a story of no more than 7,500 characters based on the 2024 theme, "Once in a Blue Moon". According to the contest website, this year's theme "evokes rare and enchanting moments, those occasions when the unexpected comes to life. Whether it’s a fleeting miracle, an impossible coincidence, or a chance encounter that changes everything, 'Once in a Blue Moon' invites you to explore the magic of the unexpected. This theme, full of wonder and mystery, opens the door to a world where extraordinary things happen… but only once in a while."

This award is developed by the publisher Short Edition, the creators of the innovative Short Story Dispensers (one of which is housed in Crabbe Library Main Lobby).

New students print out stories from the Short Story Dispenser in Crabbe Library’s lobby, August 2024.

The contest includes a public voting phase, in which all participants' stories will be highlighted on the Short Edition website alongside those of fellow students from participating campuses including the University of Pikeville, Harvard University, Carnegie Mellon, Fayetteville State University, and more. In addition to winning a cash prize of up to $550, contest winners will also have their stories shared at universities throughout the world in Short Edition's Short Story Dispensers.

Here’s a quick run-down on the key details and dates:

  • Qualified participants: any EKU student over the age of 18
