This collection holds a wide range of history relating to the Clay family and White Hall. Included are correspondence, contracts, deeds, wills, books, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

Much of this collection consists of scrapbooks put together by C.M. Clay which cover many different subjects. They consist mostly of news clippings about C.M. Clay or articles and editorial comments about political issues that were relevant at the time. Also included are letters to Clay and speeches given by Clay at various venues, legal documents, and photographs.

These are the personal and business papers of the Clays, a prominent Bluegrass family. Included are materials relating to General Green Clay, his sister, Martha Clay Lewis, and his sons Brutus and Cassius Marcellus Clay. As the family's main business was agriculture, the collection contains many letters dealing with farming, livestock and slavery. There are also several large subgroups of miscellaneous volumes relating to the various family members.

The Cassius M. Clay journal and papers (dated 1826-1941, undated; 0.25 cubic feet; 1 box, 2 folders) primarily comprises a journal kept by abolitionist Cassius M. Clay to document financial and business transactions. Additionally, the journal occasionally documents Clay's farm as well as his family and personal life. The journal contains numerous entries detailing his transactions buying and selling livestock; selling land; settling the estate of his father Green Clay (1757-1826); his financial relationship with his brother Brutus Clay; and the buying and leasing of slaves.

Records relating to Green Clay's estate were scanned from Will Books D & E as well as some estate settlement records that are stored in a separate location.
