This guide contains information about installing and using Zotero, a free open source reference management program.

Steps to Get Started

Before using Zotero, you will need to do three things:

  1. Create a Zotero account.
  2. Install Zotero.
  3. Install Zotero's browser connectors.

Details for completing each step are listed below.

Using an iPad or iPhone?

The official Zotero iPad and iPhone app is available on the App Store.

The mobile version of the Zotero web library also allows you to access and edit your Zotero library on your tablet or mobile phone.

You can also save items to your Zotero account using zotero.org/save.

How to Install Zotero

Create an account

Before getting started, you will need to create an account. Registering for an account allows you to sync your Zotero library to the cloud, create group libraries to collaborate with other Zotero users, and to monitor your storage usage.

Install Zotero for Windows or Mac

Visit zotero.org/download. Choose Download to install.

Add Connectors

Choose Install to add connectors for each browser you might use to do research.

Chrome Connector* - Note: If you are using your EKU Google account, view the EKU IT Self Service portal to install the Chrome connector to your EKU profile. (You might be prompted to log in to view the instructions.) Once logged in, you should be able to follow the instructions to open Self Service. Once you are in the Self Service page, you should be able to look at “All” to see a list of available applications to find the Zotero connector. (I think it’s one of the last ones since they are listed alphabetically.) From there, you should be able to click on it to install the Zotero connector.

Safari Connector: The Zotero Connector for Safari is bundled with Zotero. It can be enabled from the Extensions pane of the Safari preferences
