Partner with a Librarian

Librarians in the LMS (Canvas)

The Course Librarian* role in EKU's LMS (Canvas) is designed to allow librarians to be available to students in the virtual learning space; the title "Course Librarian" helps students identify that person and understand their role in the course. When added to a class in the LMS (Canvas), embedded librarians can help with:

Library Instruction

  • Create learning objects delivered through Canvas, such as modules, videos, and activities. These modules can cover topics such as:
    • Information literacy themes
    • Research strategies
    • Source discovery and evaluation
  • A full overview can be found in our Asynchronous Instructional Support Guide.

Course Readings

  • Assist with identifying library resources and providing support in linking/embedding these resources in your course.
  • Assist with identifying and adapting open educational resources.
  • Hosting course reserve materials.

Assignments

  • Provide guidance and support in creating or redesigning research and/or information literacy assignments.

Research Support

  • Provide expert guidance and answer student questions related to library-integrated assignments and learning modules, fostering deeper engagement with information literacy and research concepts.

By partnering with a Course Librarian, instructors can enhance student research skills, provide specialized support, and integrate information literacy seamlessly into their curriculum.

*If you are interested in adding a Course Librarian to your Canvas course(s), please reach out to your Library liaison as you are preparing your course for students each semester rather than waiting until your course opens; the process for adding a Course Librarian must be mediated by the IDC and may require approval from your department head and/or the Registrar.

Grading Policy

To ensure consistent and equitable assessment and maintain the librarian's focus on direct student support, librarians will not be responsible for formally grading students' coursework or assignments while embedded in online classes and grading of information literacy assignments will remain the responsibility of the instructor of record. Librarians can create auto-graded information literacy assignments where appropriate, help design rubrics, and/or offer additional advice on what success looks like for information literacy, research, and other library-related assignments. This approach ensures the librarian role remains one of embedded support for the course rather than one of co-teaching.
